Overview
New Zealand modernised its framework with the Protected Disclosures (Protection of Whistleblowers) Act 2022, replacing the 2000 Act.
What counts as serious wrongdoing
The Act covers serious risks to public health and safety, the environment, the maintenance of law, unlawful or corrupt use of public funds, and conduct that is oppressive, discriminatory or grossly negligent by public-sector bodies.
Key features
- Discloses can report directly to an appropriate authority at any time.
- Protection from retaliation and strong confidentiality obligations apply.
- Public-sector organisations must have, and publish, internal procedures.
