Understanding the Swedish Whistleblowing Act
This course introduces all staff in Sweden to the Whistleblowing Act (Lag 2021:890), explaining who is protected, what can be reported, how to report concerns safely, and what protections exist against retaliation.
Sweden's Whistleblowing Act (Lag 2021:890), which came into force on 17 December 2021 and was amended in 2022 to align fully with the EU Whistleblowing Directive (2019/1937/EU), establishes a comprehensive framework for protecting individuals who report wrongdoing in a work-related context. For organisations operating in Sweden, understanding and complying with this legislation is not optional — it is a legal obligation that carries real consequences for non-compliance.
This course is designed for all staff across your organisation. It explains the purpose and scope of the Whistleblowing Act in plain language, walks you through what types of concerns can be reported, how internal and external reporting channels work, and what protections the law provides to those who speak up. Whether you are an employee, contractor, volunteer, or board member, this course will help you understand your rights and responsibilities under Swedish law.
This is the all-staff course in a two-course set for Sweden. A separate, more detailed course is available for managers, HR professionals, and those responsible for administering internal reporting channels. By completing this course, you will be equipped to recognise reportable concerns, know how to raise them appropriately, and understand the protections that apply to you and your colleagues when you do so in good faith.
